English VS Indonesian Poetry (Deinition, Types and Examples)

Poetry is a literary work in the form of writing that uses not only words, but also forms, sound patterns, parables, and figurative language to convey messages. According to Mc. Caulay, Hudson in Aminuddin (1987: 134) revealed that poetry is a branch of literature that uses words as a medium of delivery to produce illusions and imagination, just like paintings that use lines and colors to describe the painter's ideas. While we can accept the definition of the above formulation of poetry, because we are often presented with an illusion of beauty, carried away in a dream, in line with the beauty of the arrangement of sound elements, the creation of ideas, and a certain atmosphere when reading a poem.

Inside a poetry there are elements such as rhythm, rhyme, alliteration, assonance, stanzas, imaginary and diction. As for the genre or kinds of poetry itself, there are narrative poetry, dramatic poetry and lyrical poetry. In addition, the great philosopher Aristotle suggested that poetry is divided into three genres: comedy, tragedy and epic. Aristotle claimed comedy is an imitation of what is inferior in a way that is laughable. He then said that both tragedies and epics are made to portray suffering in a way to produce certain effects with the only difference between the two being epics used a one-verse form and is narrative. In today, poetry is still considered the owner of the three main poetic forms: lyric, narrative, dramatic. Each form can then be divided into many subdivisions, each consisting of a rhyme scheme, rhythm and or style.

Here, I'll give you example o each type of English poetry.

1. Narrative poetry

A special type of poem that tells a story is called narrative poetry. Here is the example.

2. Dramatic poetry

Any drama written in verse which is meant to be spoken, usually to tell a story or potray a situation is called dramatic poetry.

3. Lyrical poetry

This is a formal type of poetry which expresses personal emotions or feelings, typically spoken in the first person. It is not equivalent to song lyrics, though they are often in the lyric mode.

In Indonesia, there are two types of poetry, namely old poetry and new poetry.

Pantun, gurindam and syair are examples of old poetry. Old poetry is poetry that is bound by rules, including:

  • Anonymous: is a folk poem whose author is unknown.
  • Delivered from mouth to mouth, so it is oral literature.
  • Bound with the rules for the number of lines per stanza, the number of syllables and rhymes.
Example of pantun:

Meanwhile, new poetry is poetry that is freer than old poetry in terms of the number of lines, syllables, and rhymes.  Contemporary poetry is one part of new poetry, which is then further divided into several branches such as mantra poetry and mbeling poetry. Below is an example of mantra "menabur benih" poetry.

Okay, I think that was all from me for the explanation of poetry and its kinds. Hopefully this article will useful for all of us. Thank you for visiting my blog. See you..
